Simona Kossak — biologist, forest scientist, and one of the most singular figures in Polish conservation history — spent three decades in a wooden forester's lodge called Dziedzinka, deep in the Białowieża Forest, living alongside its wildlife rather than simply studying it. This 597-page illustrated saga is her account of the forest's history: from the glacial period and its mammoth hunters, through royal hunting grounds, wartime plunder, and the fight to protect one of the last strongholds of the European bison, right up to the conservation battles of the 20th century.
Since her death in 2007, Kossak has become something of a cult figure — her life at Dziedzinka, her wolves, and her fierce advocacy for Białowieża have drawn growing international attention. This edition, translated by Elżbieta Kowalewska, has been out of print for years and rarely surfaces in English.
